Jazz/Tap Primary Level
CPAD NYC Flatiron · NoMad
Age group: 3-5 years old. Children must be 3 years old by September to enroll. Jazz & Tap Primary Level is a structured introduction to dance designed for young children who are ready to learn in a focused, engaging, and encouraging environment. This program combines the energetic style of jazz with the rhythmic foundations of tap, helping dancers develop coordination, musicality, confidence, and classroom skills while fostering a lifelong love of dance. Students are introduced to the fundamental principles of both jazz and tap through age-appropriate, progressive instruction. In jazz, dancers develop posture, body alignment, flexibility, balance, locomotor movement, simple turns, jumps, and expressive performance. In tap, they explore rhythm, timing, weight transfer, and sound clarity while learning foundational steps such as toe taps, heel drops, shuffles, marches, and basic combinations. Each class follows a consistent curriculum that encourages concentration, listening skills, spatial awareness, memory, and positive classroom etiquette. Through technical exercises, rhythm activities, across-the-floor progressions, and introductory choreography, students build confidence while learning the value of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. Throughout the season, dancers prepare age-appropriate choreography and participate in two annual stage performances , allowing them to develop stage presence, performance confidence, and the joy of sharing their accomplishments with family and friends. No prior dance experience is required. Primary Level Jazz & Tap provides an excellent introduction to formal dance education and prepares students for continued training in jazz, tap, and musical theatre within a structured, school-based program.
