China Discovery Series for Grades 2-4
New Canaan Library · New Canaan
Ready to embark on an exciting cultural journey and bring your imagination to life? Join us for China Discovery, an engaging, hands-on 4-week workshop series where children explore Chinese heritage through creative art, bringing iconic Chinese foods and culinary traditions to life! (Please note: This is a hands-on art and crafting workshop. No actual food will be served or consumed during class.) Designed for students in grades 2–4 (ages 7–9), each weekly session introduces a beloved traditional Chinese food or festive treat—from traditional mooncakes and hand-pulled noodles to lucky dumplings and candied fruit skewers. Through interactive storytelling and hands-on art activities using colorful, lightweight clay, paper, and other creative materials, participants will explore the cultural stories and traditions behind these foods while developing fine motor skills through molding, texturing, folding, shaping, and arranging. Children will create their own unique artistic interpretations of traditional Chinese foods to take home. All skill levels are welcome, and all materials will be provided. This class meets for four Saturdays (9/19, 9/26, 10/3, and 10/10) and is strictly capped at 12 students. Out of respect to the instructor and due to the limited number of seats, please commit to attending on all four dates. Lessons will build on one another. About the Instructor The program is designed and led by Yuting Song, Vice Principal and Instructor at Norwalk Chinese School and a Chinese language teacher at local private schools. With years of experience in Chinese language and cultural education, Yuting specializes in creating immersive, hands-on learning experiences for young students. By blending traditional craftsmanship with interactive storytelling and creative art, she is passionate about making global cultural heritage engaging, accessible, and fun for children.

Music Meets STEM: Discover the Science Behind the Violin for 7-9 years old
New Canaan Library · New Canaan
In this fun, hands-on workshop, children will explore how sound, vibration, and pitch work through a live violin demonstration and simple science experiments. No musical or science experience is needed; just bring your curiosity! Each child will take home their own handmade instrument and discover that science can be found in the music we hear every day. This program is intended for children ages 7-9 years old. This class will be led by Nancy, an 11th-grade student at NCHS and a longtime New Canaan Library volunteer. She has studied violin for 8+ years and is a longtime member of the Principal Orchestra of the Norwalk Youth Symphony, performing with the ensemble at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Nancy enjoys exploring the connections between music and science and creating hands-on activities that make learning fun and accessible for children.
