Join Brookyln (the dog) and her caretaker Toni (the human) as kids get a chance to read with them for 15 minutes. Kids in grades K-5 are welcome to bring a book or choose one from the Library. Parents are asked to wait in the Children's Room while their child enjoys reading together with Brooklyn. Register one child per slot. Please only register for one slot: 4:00, 4:15, 4:30 or 4:45PM. Brooklyn and Toni are part of the Reading Education Assistance Dogs® [R.E.A.D.] program, which has gained a nationwide reputation as an outstanding method for helping children of all ages to improve their reading skills and comprehension. Quite simply, children in the program – in schools and libraries – read to the dogs! Again and again, the dogs’ presence, loving and non-judgmental, proves to have a calming effect on the youngsters. That relaxed attitude promotes more enthusiastic reading. And – it is fun!

Watching your child grow and reach new stages is one of the most rewarding parts of parenting. From their first smile to their first steps, every new skill is exciting. At the same time, it’s natural for parents to wonder: Is my child developing “on time?” Understanding early childhood developmental milestones can give parents valuable insight into their child’s progress and help identify potential delays early on. In this presentation, you’ll hear from a group of experts about key physical, communication, and social-emotional developmental milestones for children from birth to five. You’ll also learn how to monitor your child’s development and discover ways to support their healthy growth and overall well-being. Plus, a representative from Sparkler, a free service for Connecticut families developed by the CT Office of Early Childhood, will be available to demonstrate how parents can check in on their child’s progress across key milestones and find fun activities to spark early learning. Registration for this class is for each individual date. All participants must be at least 3 years old by the date of the class. During the first five minutes of the program, those who are on the waitlist may be admitted if there are open spaces. If there is no one on the waitlist present after 5 minutes have passed, walk-in attendees may be admitted. We do not guarantee space for anyone on the waitlist or walk-in.

Ready to get creative and bring your imagination to life? Join a few NCHS art students for a fun, hands-on art class! Students will experiment with real leaves and paint to create their own colorful leaf print collages. Materials will be provided. These classes are organized by Emily Meng, a high school sophomore and recipient of multiple Scholastic Art Awards, including the CAEA/Arnini Best in Drawing Award, as well as additional honors in national and international competitions. Emily has a strong background in drawing, painting, crafting, and mural work, and she is passionate about sharing creative, hands-on experiences with young students. Each week will feature an optional project or challenge to jump start your creativity and curiosity. Ten laptops will be available for computer games as well as an assortment of board games if you'd like to stay offline. If you'd like a more structured project, you can crochet or explore other crafts. If you'd prefer to tinker, try K'NEX or LEGO EV3. Each month we will take on a 3D design project using a CAD software. This month we will be creating a print-in-place hinged box in Tinkercad. Some 3D design experience in Tinkercad or similar program is helpful but not required. Please note that due to the time it takes to 3D print an object, finished projects may need to be picked up after the class. You will receive a confirmation email when your finished printed project is ready for pick up. For students in grades 4-7. Registration opens October 1 at 8am.

Reading to a therapy dog is a proven and effective way to help children improve literacy and communication skills. Reading aloud to a specially trained, calm, and nonjudgmental dog creates a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere where children feel comfortable and uninhibited, leading to increased confidence and reduced stress. These positive effects support stronger reading development and communication abilities. Therapy Dog Brigade’s specially trained and certified therapy dogs, volunteering alongside their owner-handlers, visit schools, libraries, and other community settings to provide a safe and supportive space for young readers, inspiring them to enjoy reading and grow into lifelong learners.

Families can drop in to make art with Barbara Rucci! We will have 3 different art stations where you can explore your creativity. No registration needed; this is a drop-in program. Please note, you may be asked to wait until space opens up in the program room. This program is designed for children to explore materials and ideas on their own. Parents are free to engage with other parents, or their child, as long as they are not impeding their child’s creative process. Drop-offs will not be permitted. Barbara Rucci is passionate about two things: children and art. She is a professional graphic designer, art teacher, blogger, and mom to three creative thinkers. In 2012, she began her blog, Art Bar, a place where she explores her love of child-led art experiences and handmade things. Soon thereafter she began teaching art in her home. She is also the author of Art Workshop for Children: How to Foster Original Thinking with Over 30 Process Art Experiences and Cardboard Creations: Open-ended Exploration with Recycled Materials.
