About this event

This introductory class is geared toward players new to competitive Scrabble. Whether you’ve never played Scrabble at all or have played “living room” Scrabble with family and friends, Scrabble coach Cornelia Guest will explain winning strategies. You’ll learn how to make high-scoring overlaps and 50-point bonus “bingo” plays, how to “balance” your rack to optimize scoring opportunities, and how tracking tiles can give you a winning edge. Players expand their vocabulary, practice their math skills, and learn “board vision” to make their smartest plays. Come find out how much fun competitive Scrabble can be! Equipment, scoresheets, and “Cheat Sheets” are provided. School Scrabble, for players from 3rd grade through high school, is an exciting and fun game where two teams of two players compete against each other using word and math knowledge. For the past 20 years, the Ridgefield Library Scrabble Program has trained the top School Scrabble players in the country, with 24 youth champions and runners-up--including the only three-time School Scrabble champion. Many of these players have gone on to become successful adult players as well—the winner of this year’s national championship (earning $10,000) is a player who started at the Ridgefield Library program as a 10-year-old. Children entering grades 1-4 enhance their oral reading skills by reading to trained therapy dogs from ROAR Ridgefield. Time slots will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Ms. May, who is a Chinese teacher at Thistle Waithe Learning Center in South Salem, will lead families in an engaging language program to encourage and promote learning a second language.
