Join our Library Director Giovanna Fiorino-Iannace for a special tour and hands on workshop at Jay Heritage Center in Rye, NY. This program will be led by Lucia Maestro, the Director of Horticulture at the Jay Heritage Center and Adjunct Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies at Manhattanville College. This garden tour and outdoor workshop aims to connect the group with the historical background of the property, nature and sustainability in general in this unique outdoor classroom. Location: 210 Boston Post Rd, Rye, NY 10580 We will meet at the Center at 10:45 am in front of the mansion's entrance. Parking is free. Registration is required to reserve your spot. The Historic Gardens at the Jay Estate in Rye, New York, are part of a larger 23-acre park operated by the nonprofit Jay Heritage Center (JHC). The Jay state is both a National Historic Landmark site and a Public Park. The Jay Estate is the childhood home of American Founding Father, jurist, anti-slavery advocate, and peacemaker John Jay and is a National Historic Landmark site. It is also a significant site on the African American Heritage Trail and was the home of enslaved and freed women, men, and their families, whose narratives are also expressed in the landscape. The property once belonged to the Munsee Lenape and is considered an active and significant archaeological site. The historic gardens were redesigned by Thomas Woltz, from NBW Landscape Architects, and works were completed in 2021. The gardens were formally opened to the public in 2022. The resulting garden rooms intend to activate new inclusive and accessible public programs and experiences at JHC and facilitate its growth as a vibrant educational campus.” (www.jayheritagecenter.org)
