Want to create an object on a 3D printer? Cut decals on a Cricut? Engrave a gift with a laser cutter? Create custom chocolate molds on a vacuum former? You can do it all – and more! – at the Innovation & Learning Center, the Desmond-Fish Public Library’s makerspace and education center. During open makerspace hours, patrons can use, learn about, and experiment with all the tools available in the ILC, whether to work on a personal project, dream up something new, or just learn new skills. Don’t know what to make? A new stay-and-make project is available every month, suitable for both new and experienced creators! Click here for a full list of makerspace equipment and software. Please note: due to staffing limitations, use for other library needs, or repair status, not all equipment or software may be available at each visit. Email our Digital Services Librarian or book an appointment to inquire about the use of specific materials. Some equipment may require a short training session and not be available for use by children. In this no-commitment, weekly club, kids and teens in grades 2-12 can practice their building skills, show off their creativity, make friends, and learn new techniques. Each week, we’ll feature a creative challenge for builders to complete (or work on a personal project), and introduce advanced building techniques. We are not able to accommodate adult builders at this time; however, check out our Tall & Small Lego Day series for a chance for kids to build alongside their grownups! Builders have access to our wide collection of Lego system bricks; advanced builders can experiment with robotics using our Lego Mindstorms and WeDo kits, with instructor assistance if time permits. Do you have extra Lego gathering dust that you might want to see live a new life at the Library? We are always in need of extra bricks! Email us if you can help.

This meetup is focused on noncompetitive games that allow players to show off their creativity, individuality, and teamwork. We ask that games not of this nature (for instance, Roblox or Fortnite) not be introduced in this setting. We have computers with Minecraft, The Sims 4, and Scratch, and one Nintendo Switch with Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, Let’s Build a Zoo, and Super Mario Maker available. We highly recommend console players, or players of other games, bring their own machines with them. This group is best for kids aged Kindergarten and up, as some reading ability is necessary to navigate the games. Subject to our Safe Child Policy, children under 12 years of age must have a caregiver present in the building. Registration is not required for this program.

Sit, stay, read! Join us for an opportunity to read to Journey, one of the therapy dogs from Hudson Valley Paws for a Cause. For many children, reading out loud can be stressful. FREEDFPL Visits Constitution Island

Join DFPL as we visit one of our local historic treasures for Rev250! We will be visiting Constitution Island for a two-part tour: A walk to the ruins of the Revolutionary War fortifications and a tour of the Warner House, former residence of two popular 19th Century writers, Susan and Anna Warner. The house has recently been restored to its original condition and contains a remarkable collection of furniture and artifacts. Docents on site will provide the tours, and local historian, Ronnie Coffey will also be on hand to talk about the island’s history. Our group will be meeting at the gate at the far end of the Metro North parking lot in Cold Spring promptly at 10:45am. A shuttle will then transport us to the island for the tours. Each tour lasts a little less than an hour. Following the tours, we will be able to visit the gift shop, walk the gardens, and picnic on the grounds. This visit is free of charge to registrants courtesy of the library. Registration is required. Families are welcome to register but all children must be at least six years of age. Please wear comfortable shoes as there will be walking, uneven terrain, and stairs in the historic home. Registrants are encourage to bring a bag lunch to enjoy on the property. Bottled water and cookies will be available in the gift shop for a small donation.

Pop into our program room anytime between 12-5PM for Fantasy Friday, where we’ll be binging fantasy television shows. This time, we’ll be screening a marathon of season one of The Owl House. Refreshments will be provided. About The Show: Created by Dana Terrace, The Owl House is a horror-comedy about a book-loving teen who doesn’t fit in in the real world. When her mom sends her off to “Reality Check Summer Camp,” she accidentally stumbles through a portal into a terrifying and magical world, where she learns to become a witch, even though humans have no magical abilities. Sit, stay, read! Join us for an opportunity to read to Journey, one of the therapy dogs from Hudson Valley Paws for a Cause. For many children, reading out loud can be stressful. But reading to a dog can provide them a chance to improve their reading skills with a non-judgmental listener. For children in grades Kindergarten and up. Each child will be allotted fifteen minutes of reading time. Space is limited and registration is required. Only one child may be registered for each available space. Register Here

Teams of one adult and one child will work together to build and show off a Lego masterpiece (and may encounter a few unexpected tricks and treats). Please register once per team. Want to create an object on a 3D printer? Cut decals on a Cricut? Engrave a gift with a laser cutter? Create custom chocolate molds on a vacuum former? You can do it all – and more! – at the Innovation & Learning Center, the Desmond-Fish Public Library’s makerspace and education center. During open makerspace hours, patrons can use, learn about, and experiment with all the tools available in the ILC, whether to work on a personal project, dream up something new, or just learn new skills. Don’t know what to make? A new stay-and-make project is available every month, suitable for both new and experienced creators! Click here for a full list of makerspace equipment and software. Please note: due to staffing limitations, use for other library needs, or repair status, not all equipment or software may be available at each visit. Email our Digital Services Librarian or book an appointment to inquire about the use of specific materials. Some equipment may require a short training session and not be available for use by children. Some consumable resources (3D printer filament, vacuum former sheets, wooden boards etc.) may incur a small fee. Patrons may bring their own consumable resources for no charge. In order to accommodate everyone, dedicated one-on-one instruction is not available during open lab hours, although assistance with projects is available as time permits.
