Liberty Hall has witnessed over 250 years of American and New Jersey history. Over that time, the main house has undergone many changes, from its original 14-room building to the current 50-room structure. Join us on the second Sunday of the month for a special architecture tour that explores the many changes to the main house and the architectural styles of the time. Reservations suggested; walk-ins welcome.

Liberty Hall is extending its tour hours, just for members! Come explore how food production, preservation, and preparation have changed over the 250 years of Liberty Hall’s history. How was food handled before the days of supermarkets and refrigeration? What was it like to cook in a colonial kitchen? What were meals like in the Victorian era? Be the first to take the brand-new Farm to Table tour and find out the answers to all these questions. This tour includes hands-on activities and is a member-exclusive experience! As we continue celebrating America’s 250th birthday, join us for an interactive day of history, music, and hands-on fun! Guests can make their own instruments, enjoy games and snacks, try on Colonial clothing, and even play authentic military rhythms on the drums. Learn how drums were used to communicate and keep soldiers in step during the Revolutionary War through an engaging, hands-on presentation led by percussionist and museum educator Justin Vedovelli. It’s a fun and unique way to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary while bringing history to life through music! Recommended for ages 5 through 12. Reservations are required. Space is limited.

Bearing Witness: Uncovering the Enslaved of Liberty Hall

Take a special tour of Liberty Hall and learn the stories of the enslaved individuals who lived and labored at the historic home and on its grounds. Using letters, census records, manumission contracts, and even grave sites in Elizabeth, uncover the stories of Abbe, Belle, Lambert, Henry, Sarah, Peter, and others. Learn about the ongoing research at Liberty Hall and Kean University as we give voice and narrative to the individuals who were once enslaved at this historic home. Reservations encouraged.

From Susan Livingston, daughter of Governor Livingston, whose daring exploits saved Liberty Hall from the British during the Revolutionary War, to Abbe, an enslaved woman who attempted to self-emancipate (free herself), to Mary Alice Barney Kean, who worked tirelessly for the preservation of our historic structures, the ladies of Liberty Hall have played an important role in the history of our community and our nation. This special tour of Liberty Hall, held on the fourth Sunday of the month, highlights the incredible women who lived and labored in this historic home. Reservations suggested; walk-ins welcome.

Our special children’s tour offers your little ones an engaging, personal experience of life from the 1700s through the 1990s. This fun, hands-on tour also includes a history scavenger hunt!
