Join us in the JBWR Pollinator Garden to care for the garden and perform routine maintenance. Love gardening but don’t have the space or resources? This is a great opportunity to get your hands in the soil while supporting your local ecosystem and community. There will also be an opportunity to sign up as a regular volunteer gardener. We’ll be rejuvenating this vital habitat for pollinators; together, we’ll transplant eight native species grown from seed and give the garden a seasonal refresh. Volunteers will assist with clearing garden beds, repairing the gravel trail, spreading compost, and planting new seedlings. All tools will be provided. This event is open to all ages. Youth under 16 must be accompanied by a legal guardian. Please dress appropriately for the weather and for moderate outdoor physical activity. Spaces are limited—sign up today and help support pollinators in your community!

Learn meditative and mindful drawing, printmaking and sculptural techniques, scientific observation with plant portraiture, nature-inspired intuitive artmaking and mixed media exploration, and other various practices from botanical and ecologically-focused contemporary artists to create works of art to nurture your relationship to the garden. Immerse yourself in the learning garden, greenhouse, and across Riverbank State Park’s green roof overlooking the Hudson River to create artwork that is rooted in place and in partnership with plants. Workshops are rain or shine. With prior planning, we can add a few small mats onto the pebbled ground of greenhouse to make a small wheel-chair accessible path. Our learning garden has grass paths, and the entrance is through a gate with a small, raised entrance. Our tables can be lowered/raised, and we have several backless benches or stools. Our kitchen is in regular use, and while we try to cook without peanuts, much of our cookware is shared and we cannot guarantee a nut-free environment. We have a first aid kit, and the closest AED is in another building several yards away. Drinking water is made available in refillable pitchers. Our closest bathrooms are a building away, about a one-minute walk. A gender neutral bathroom is also available, and this is accessible by key which you can request from staff. Explore the origins stories of CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture)as we unpack and taste test the foods inside. Join us in the garden and around the table to explore how we can reclaim ancestral cooking by recovering the principles that shaped our ancestors’ relationship with food rather than simply recreating historical recipes. Participants will examine how traditional practices such as cooking with the senses, eating seasonally and locally, and preparing food with intention can be integrated with modern nutritional knowledge to create a more connected and nourishing approach to cooking. Together, we will explore what it truly means to eat in relationship with the land, the seasons, and the people we feed, while gaining practical ways to apply these ideas in everyday life. Your Facilitator: Journei Bimwala is a clinical herbalist, foraging practitioner, nutrition health coach, and educator dedicated to helping people build meaningful relationships with the natural world through food and plants. Drawing from her experience in foraging, herbal medicine, and community education, she teaches participants how to reconnect with the landscapes they inhabit by making what is unknown known and what is known accessible. Her work weaves together traditional ecological knowledge, modern nutritional understanding, and cultural wisdom to inspire people to see food not only as nourishment, but as a pathway to health, connection, and stewardship. Cooking, sharing, and storytelling through the harvest of the season. History, place, and imagination are all deeply rooted in what and how we grow and eat. Each Friday evening, this supper club gathers around ingredients of the week–produce grown in the garden and food from our local CSA. A CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is rooted in the idea that community members share in the risks and rewards of farming. By committing to a season’s harvest, we support farmers through the lands’ and our current food system’s uncertainties and in return, receive food that is grown in integrity and largely outside of the current extractive and exploitive, harmful food systems. Together, we’ll gather to deepen our relationships with the sources of our food and our empathy for the people’s whose hands that food has passed through. Through collaborative cooking, recipe-sharing, and conversations around the table, we explore the cultural, ecological, and personal dimensions of food. Drawing inspiration from our kitchen’s stories, cookbooks, and the week’s harvest, we’ll discover how the simple act of preparing and sharing a meal can connect us more deeply to land-workers, food-workers, and to the land theirself. This is a free drop-in program. Come to every class or come to one or two that you are available for. Workshops are rain or shine. Accessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. Explore the origins stories of CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture)as we unpack and taste test the foods inside. What does it truly mean to eat seasonally? Seasonal eating is more than purchasing what’s available at the farmers market it’s about learning to read the landscape, understand your local ecosystem, and recognize how nature supports our nutritional needs throughout the year. Join us around the garden table to explore how seasonal foods reflect the changing needs of both the environment and our bodies. Together, we will examine what grows during each season, how local ecosystems shape the foods available to us, and how observing these natural cycles can help us make more intentional food choices. Participants will also learn how to identify nutritional strengths and limitations within their regional food system, encouraging a flexible approach that combines local foods with informed decisions about what may need to be supplemented or sourced elsewhere. By the end of the workshop, participants will gain practical tools for observing seasonal change, understanding their local food landscape, and developing a deeper relationship with the place they call home. When inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces. Our closest bathrooms are a building away, about a one-minute walk. A gender neutral bathroom is also available, and this is accessible by key which you can request from staff. What does it feel like when we extend care to ourselves and the collective? How do plants and our local ecologies care for us? How can we care for the plants and local ecologies in return? Weave in rituals and recipes into your own self-care and community care practices through weekly explorations in herbal arts, somatic movement in the greenhouse and garden, folk remedies, and other wild-crafts and meditative activities that foster a deeper connection to plants to care for the body, mental health, and the people you move with. Each week, be guided by a guest herbalist, healing artist, or wellness practitioner who will help you create your own toolkit and apothecary for self and communal care. Workshops are rain or shine. Create a petite and pocket-sided bouquet with a handful of garden blooms for your kitchen table Join is in the garden among the blooms to create your own pocket full of posies–a minerature bouqet to brighten the smallest of corners. Working with a few select blooms from the garden and from NYC’s flower market, we’ll create our own pocket-sized floral arrangements, learning about regenerative flower farming and the power of flowers to convey meaning through symbols and metaphor. Your Facilitator: Nicole Smith of A Tribe Called Flowers Nicole Smith is the founder of A Tribe Called Flowers, a community-centered project rooted in the belief that flowers—and the joy they bring—should be accessible to everyone. What began as a simple hobby of arranging blooms blossomed into a calling: sharing beauty, encouragement, and small moments of brightness with people who need it most. Nicole describes herself as a flower enthusiast. Through A Tribe Called Flowers, she creates handcrafted bouquets that are donated, free of charge, to local shelters, rehabilitation centers, and communities across the city. Each bouquet becomes a gesture of care, a reminder that someone is thinking of you, and a spark of joy delivered through flowers. As a nonprofit organization, all donations to ATCF directly fund the making of these bouquets, allowing Nicole to continue spreading beauty and connection one arrangement at a time. Grounded in the garden, join us to critically and creatively engage in a diversity of artmaking techniques that open us up to deeper dialogue on place, our relationships to our lived environments, ecological concerns, and contemporary culture. Slow down, breathe, allow your senses to open, listen to the messages from nature. Join us with certified Forest Therapy Guide Lori Klamner to explore how the concept of bathing in the essence of the forest and forest bathing can be integrated right here in our community garden spaces in our very urban landscapes. Together, we’ll take a slow walk with invitations to notice the shapes of leaves, moving our hands to outline the shapes that call to us, and noticing how it feels for our feet to kiss the earth. Then, we’ll find a sit spot and allow our minds to focus on parts of the garden that speak to us. After each section of these invitations, we will have a sharing circle and tea made from foraged and harvesed plants to practice our attention and reflection in our shared learning garden. Your Facilitator: Lori Klamner is a climate activist and bodywork therapist. A native New Yorker, she has found the Urban Forest to be a truly healing and restorative place. She trained to become a Certified Forest Therapist in 2021, and specializes in group walks in urban parks. What does it mean to heal in community? What does it feel like to extend care—to ourselves, ecologies, and our shared earth? This weekly series explores the role of plants in supporting both personal and communal well-being through herbal arts, folk remedies, somatic movement, meditative wildcrafting, and shared ritual. Participants are guided by guest herbalists, healing artists, and wellness practitioners to co-create a toolkit that not only resources individuals in caring for themselves, but stretches our imagination and capacity to care for the collective and our shared earth. Recipes and Rituals for Community Care is rooted in reciprocity with land, ancestral knowledge, and the rhythms of the seasons. Workshops are rain or shine.
