SPRING 2026: Wednesday Traditional Arts, Private Class

Prospect Park 9th Street Entrance · Park Slope

This is a private class with a maximum capacity of three children. Students may join later in the season at a prorated rate. This class is especially well suited for children who are passionate about slow crafting and curious about world traditions. In our Traditional Arts Classes, children are introduced to craft traditions from around the world, working with authentic tools and techniques drawn from diverse cultures. Alongside hands-on art experiences, students explore mythology, history, ways of life, belief systems, and more, deepening their understanding of the cultural contexts behind each craft. In previous seasons, students have worked on projects such as weaving, basketry, block printing, silk dyeing, bookmaking, paper making, embroidery, natural ink making, stone carving, metal embossing, and much more! These classes will take place in Prospect Park, where students will enjoy meaningful time in nature and learn about plant identification and edible Northeastern plants. On rainy days, we'll meet indoors at Spark Home Studio at 523 8th street between Prospect Park West and 8th ave. https://sparkartsbk.org/

Natural Paints : Calling nature lovers! During this class, we will be exploring the wonderful world of color found in organic materials. We’ll experiment with many flowers, roots, woods, and even insects traditionally used around the world in dyeing and painting. We’ll also uncover hues derived from everyday foods found in the kitchen. After creating our own range of natural inks and paints, we’ll use them to design greeting cards. This class is perfect for those who love discovery, enjoy connecting with nature, and delight in the art of painting! Nature Focus: Prospect Park is home to a rich variety of Northeastern plants and trees with edible, medicinal, crafting, and practical uses. In this class, we’ll learn to identify some of these plants along our walk. Important notes: * This class will involve walking. Please make sure that your child is prepared to walk! * In the event of rain, we will hold class indoors at 523 8th St between 8th ave and Prospect Park West and have a more in depth focus on natural ink making. * Spark Arts is a vibrant enrichment program designed for children aged 5 and up, located in Brooklyn’s Park Slope neighborhood. Natural Crafting: Calling nature lovers! During our class, we will be working with natural materials and look at examples of natural crafting and fiber art as inspiration for our own pieces. We'll work with materials like tree bark, plant fibers, and leaves to produce our own unique works of art. Nature Focus: Prospect Park is home to a rich variety of Northeastern plants and trees with edible, medicinal, crafting, and practical uses. Along our walk, we’ll learn to identify some of these plants in our park. Important notes: * This class will involve walking. Please make sure that your child is prepared to walk! * There will be no consuming of plants during the walk. * In the event of light rain, we will still meet, and be prepared for the weather with waterproof attire and umbrellas! If heavy rains are predicted, we will hold class indoors at 523 8th St between 8th ave and Prospect Park West and have a more in depth focus on natural crafting. * Spark Arts is a vibrant enrichment program designed for children aged 5 and up, located in Brooklyn’s Park Slope neighborhood.
