Native Sowing, Ages 8+
About this event
Protecting native species is essential for a healthy ecosystem. They are best suited for the weather and soil conditions of any given area, and they attract insects and wildlife. Welcome natives and learn how to create your own native garden at home. Join Lucia Maestro, Director of Horticulture and Garden Education at Jay Heritage Center (JHC; Rye, NY) and learn how to create or preserve healthy habitats for wildlife in your own backyard, while learning about some of the native species best suited to this area. Saving seeds and learning when and how to propagate your perennial plants can help you save money, while you grow your garden with all your favorite plants. This is a hands-on activity workshop, where participants will help sort through a variety of native seeds and learn how to best store them, or how to make their own "seed bombs" to take home. Materials included. Get started right away! Winter may slow down our work in the garden, but it is a great time to plan for the growing season. Learn some strategies to help create or maintain a healthy garden and encourage wildlife and pollinators in your own backyard. This workshop includes practical information to help you along the process and make the most of your green space. Take some useful tips and suggestions home with you!
