About this event

Parent-and-Me Design Sundays is a chance to share a creative morning of designing and making side by side. Each week we introduce a new design concept with a hands-on project drawn from architecture, graphic design, industrial design, or interior design. One Sunday you might make an architectural model of a modern cabin; the next, you might design your own block-printing patterns. Grown-ups can stay and create alongside their kids, or drop off and let us take it from there. Parents who stay can work as a team on a shared design or each make their own. We always lead with ideas: visualizing the possibilities, sketching, and then getting to make. And we never forget that play and joy are an important part of the creative process. Our studio is a bright, welcoming space full of creative energy, where everyone can try new things and leave proud of what they've made. Here's our up coming schedule: 10/18 - Accordion book collage 10/25 - Architectural house model 11/01 - Color study mobiles 11/08 - Chair design 11/15 - Paper light dome / igloo model 11/22 - Card making block printing 11/29 - Pattern making for wrapping paper or textiles 12/06 - Collage and pop up cards 12/13 - Geometric winter ornaments (3D forms)

Proto Thursdays

Boerum Hill Studio · Boerum Hill

ProtoToto is a design and architecture studio for kids who love to draw, build, and make things. In the same way that a theater program is the right fit for a kid who loves to perform, ProtoToto is perfect for kids who gravitate toward art and making — if your child lights up with a Posca pen, cardboard, or tape in hand, this is their kind of after-school program. Here, kids learn to think and create like designers and architects. It's a hands-on, playful, and experimental way to explore how our built environment works — the objects, buildings, information, and stories that shape everyday life. Along the way, kids develop real-life skills: creative problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. They leave more confident and more comfortable taking on open-ended challenges. Every session is different. Some weeks we experiment with materials — clay, cardstock, wire — to test new design approaches. Others we turn to fundamentals: sketching, prototyping, and craft. We toggle between 2D design and 3D building, thinking about how objects hold weight, how people move through space, and what makes something functional. And some weeks we put on our inventor hats, using design thinking to tackle real-world needs and pitch ideas like young entrepreneurs. Activities range from structured and technical to open-ended and expressive, yet always hands-on , and always playful .

We always lead with ideas: asking questions, sketching, and making prototypes. And we never forget that play and joy are important parts of the creative process.
