At Artshack, we believe art is an important tool for self-expression, problem-solving, and growth. This season, young artists will explore the world of clay, learning hand-building, the pottery wheel, and various tools. Alongside their clay work, they’ll engage in drawing, drafting, and sketching: essential practices that help children develop their ideas, refine compositions, and expand their creative thinking. Our teaching artists will guide students through a wide range of mixed-media techniques, including printmaking, felting, and sculpture. Each project encourages process-based art-making, where children experiment, make discoveries, and build confidence in their creative abilities. Clay & Más es una clase de cerámica bilingüe en un entorno en el que el español será la lengua vehicular para explicar los procesos creativos. La clase priorizará el hacer mediante prácticas iterativas arraigadas en la curiosidad y el descubrimiento. Durante este semestre nos enfocaremos en proyectos de barro inspirados en culturas, mitologías y leyendas latinoamericanas. Lxs estudiantes trabajarán en el torno y modelando a mano, utilizando diversas técnicas enseñadas durante el curso. También experimentarán con engobes y esmaltes para el acabado de sus piezas. La instrucción se ofrecerá tanto en español como en inglés, utilizando el movimiento, imágenes y demostraciones, por lo que el idioma se aprenderá haciendo y no traduciendo. Clay & Más fomenta el pensamiento creativo, el bilingüismo y la conciencia cultural, en un ambiente lúdico y acogedor. Clay & Más is a bilingual, Spanish-immersion clay class, process-driven, and rooted in curiosity and discovery. Through clay projects inspired by Latin American cultures, mythologies, and legends, kids explore storytelling, material, and technique while building Spanish vocabulary naturally through making. Students work with hand-building, the pottery wheel, slab roller, and extruder, and experiment with colorful slips, glazes, and underglazes. Instruction is offered in Spanish and English, using movement, images, and demonstration, so language is learned through doing, not translating. Clay y Más supports creative thinking, bilingualism, and cultural awareness, all in a playful, welcoming studio environment. Teen Studio Mentorship is a skills-based training program for teens (ages 12–15) who are ready to dig deep into their ceramic practice within a working studio environment. Clay is always available; kids and preteens are encouraged to experiment, play, and develop their own projects at their own pace. Clay Club is a guided studio experience that invites participants to take the lead in their making process. If you’re bringing a child, please plan to stay close by and be available if they need support focusing or staying in the studio. This class is geared for all audiences from ages 8 and up. If you sign up for the weekend before Mother's Day: All pieces will be fired and be ready for pickup by the Saturday before Mothers' Day. Get your hands covered in clay! This class is for all ages. This is a process-oriented class where participants can learn the basics of wheel throwing OR hand-building . These classes are taught by some of our awesome working members . No glazing takes place in this class. Your piece will be fired and glazed by our team, and you will be notified when your finished piece is ready for pick up! DISCLAIMER: We do not accept parties for this class. You are able to sign up with a group, but we cannot make extra accomodations or change the structure of the class. If you'd like to book a Kids Clay Party please inquire at https://www.artshackbrooklyn.org/studio/clay-parties. Students will explore value, anatomy, and form while learning how to document their process through sketchbooks, photo journals, and mixed-media studies. Our teaching artists will guide students through exercises that connect observation and imagination, from figure drawing and clay modeling to experimental constructions that merge two- and three-dimensional thinking. Each project emphasizes process-based art-making, encouraging teens to take creative risks, refine their craft, and build confidence in their ideas. At Artshack, we believe art is a powerful tool for self-expression, problem-solving, and growth.
