The Butterfield Library will participate in the Ozone Garden Network, a nation-wide project to collect data on the impact of ozone in our environment. With a grant funded by (NASA Team II) we planted both sensitive and tolerant plants to study their responses to ozone. Ozone bioindicator gardens are designed to show how pollution damages plants. We will monitor our Learning Garden until early fall, to see how our plants have been affected using visual comparison. Come and be a citizen scientist! Questions? We will meet at the Hubbard Lodge and gather in the outdoor pavilion to read a story. Then we will walk the Hubbard Lodge Trail which crosses numerous bridges, and meanders along the marshland. This trail is designated as EASY. This hike is open to families with children. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Meet at the Hubbard Lodge - Fahnestock Park - (2920 Route 9 - Cold Spring NY 10516). The hike will be chaperoned by representatives of the Butterfield Library. In the event of inclement weather, the hike will be rescheduled. Registration required to participate.

Join us for a screening of "A Winter Dream", a recently premiered documentary about a Special Olympics floor hockey team that played in World Games in Nagano, Japan. In 2005, a determined and spirited floor hockey squad from Westchester, New York earned their biggest opportunity yet, to compete in the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, representing the United States. A team from the special needs program, Northeast Special Recreation had played many great tournaments on the local and state levels, which earned them a spot to compete in these games. Many of these athletes faced numerous personal challenges throughout their lives, as well as going into the World Winter Games. The team trained rigorously in the months leading up to the international competition. With long travel days and the pressure of competition, the World Games proved to be their biggest challenge yet - their dreams of winning the gold medal hung in the balance. General Benedict Arnold is infamous for his thwarted plan to surrender American-controlled West Point to the British during the Revolutionary War. Join PHM for a history hike of Arnold’s escape path through present day Garrison, NY. Along the way we’ll discuss why the General was driven to betray the Revolution and how prominent local loyalist Beverley Robinson aided Arnold’s mission. This history hike includes scenic views of the Hudson River and West Point and will last approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. The trail is one mile in length but includes uneven rocky terrain and several steep hills. Appropriate footwear and active/outdoor attire strongly suggested. Starting Location: Marsha's Mile / Glenclyffe Trailhead Parking Lot, 8 Glenclyffe, Philipstown, NY 10524. The parking lot is on the right hand side immediately after turning from 9D onto Glenclyffe.
