Students will use the beloved and popular Minecraft platform as a gateway to learning about the properties of electricity. In Minecraft, they will design machines that use pistons, levers, buttons, traps, and combination locks. They do this by using the game’s version of circuitry (called “Redstone”) to power buildings with floors, walls, and doors that open and close. Afterward, they move on to wiring electrical projects such as an alarm box that goes off when opened to an LED magical wand. Students learn principles of circuitry and simple machinery while having fun. Our STEM Education Difference: Our core educational philosophy centers around an intimate interaction with our students. Because we know that each child learns differently and at their own pace, our 'mentors' assess and monitor your child's skill level; each class they take is matched with their skill and interests. Our curriculum and mentors focus on mastering current skills then challenge each student to get to a higher level. Regardless of which class they take, or how many times they have taken it, our students do not repeat previous projects - they are always challenged and when they are ready they work on a new and interesting assignment.

Python is one of the most popular and user friendly coding platforms. It is an interpreted, high-level, and general-purpose programming language. Python is often used as a “scripting language” for web applications. Consequently, Python is often used in software applications, pages within a web browser, the shells of operating systems, and some games. In this class, students will learn the basics of this incredible coding language. They will learn to design dice simulators, mad libs generators, text-based adventure games, and similar types of projects. They will have learn both a valuable programming language and have a great time in the process!

Kindergarten students build robots (such as the alligator, turtle, train, and car) using LEGO® building blocks and motors. In the process of making their constructions move, they will learn basic engineering and simple machine principles. They will learn about electricity and how gear meshing works to transmit energy. They will also engage in pairs and work with their mentors to develop critical teamwork and collaboration skills. Students use their imagination and apply newly learned mechanical skills to either build their own creations, or follow a blueprint. Students will design their own video-games using software developed by MIT media lab called Scratch. They will learn to be programmers: use logic, develop and piece together code to make their own games. As they build and move through such games as our “Adventure”, “Maze” and “Platform” games, they will advance their coding skills and increase the complexity of what they’re working on to more and more realistic games. In this class, students often go from being uncertain about what programming is, to being confident about their ability to come up with their own game and design it in a single class. Scratch was developed by Dr. Mitchel Resnick of the MIT Media Lab and associates. Dr. Resnick is one of Robofun’s Board members and trusted advisors.

Preschool age children are natural scientists, ready to explore and experiment. Our Little Engineers classes engage children’s curiosity by utilizing a hands-on and playful curriculum. Through our specially designed building activities, songs, stories and movement, children have a blast while developing problem-solving and design-thinking skills. Each week our Little Engineers engage in a different theme, such as outer space or construction. Students rely on their visual perception and learn how to read blueprints. Little engineers may start shy, but they leave connected to their teammates and confident about their ability to build! After the building, students go into our coding and game design curriculum, where they learn the basics of programming logic through hands-on activities and MIT’s introductory programming language called ScratchJr! Each thematic lesson, created and tested in the winter and spring of 2019, takes your child on an adventure in which their imagination comes to life through interactive stories and games. Our expert mentors and the software’s interface make programming a snap! Literally. By snapping together graphical blocks, students learn to design, edit and modify characters, add their own voices, sounds, and movement, all while solving problems and developing foundational math and literacy skills. ScratchJr. was developed by Dr. Mitchel Resnick and associates of the MIT Media Lab. Dr. Resnick is one of Robofun’s Board members and trusted advisors. Please note: as we are not a licensed childcare facility, we are unable to assist with toileting. Our Little Engineers class is open to toilet-trained children.
