Gustavo Dudamel — the Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Music & Artistic Director Designate — conducts Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite and Earth Between Oceans, a new work by Pulitzer Prize winner Ellen Reid. Sheku Kanneh-Mason, previously scheduled to perform Bloch’s Schelomo, has had to withdraw from his New York Philharmonic appearances this season doing to his ongoing recovery from a finger injury. He is extremely disappointed to be unable to play with the New York Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel. He is grateful for the support and understanding he has received, and looks forward to returning to the New York Philharmonic. Updated repertoire for this program will be announced soon.

An unprecedented collaboration between two New York–based orchestras, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, the Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Music & Artistic Director Designate. On the first half: Dudamel leads the Philharmonic in Latin-flavored works spanning a century from across the Americas, including a work by Gabriela Ortiz. On the second, they are joined by the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, a three-time Grammy-winning Salsa and Latin Jazz band led by Oscar Hernández.

Marek Janowski, who “conveyed a sense of long experience and expert certitude” (New York Classical Review) in his NY Phil debut in 2025, conducts works including Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony, inspired by the composer’s visit to the ruins of Holyrood Abbey in Edinburgh. NY Phil Principal Trumpet Christopher Martin is the soloist in Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto, and Mozart’s Serenata notturna opens the program.

Principal Cello Carter Brey also takes center stage in Saint-Saëns’s dramatic Cello Concerto No. 1. Shostakovich’s 14th Symphony conveys the plight of four suffering artists through the expressive power found of its superb text-setting and dramatic intensity. Roiling waves and emotional turmoil are vividly depicted in the Four Sea Interludes from Britten’s Peter Grimes.

A somber mood permeates much of Dvořák’s Seventh but is mitigated by a richly melodic slow movement and exuberant Czech folk dance-inspired Scherzo.

Also sprach Zarathustra was famously used in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey; its iconic opening, rapturous violin solo, stirring melodies, and vibrant orchestral color are thrilling.
