At the very top of Manhattan, Inwood has a lot going for families with small kids, and most of it is outside. Inwood Hill Park is the big draw: nearly 200 acres of actual forest, salt marsh, and river views, with multiple playgrounds tucked inside, including the recently renovated Indian Road Playground, which has climbing structures, sprinklers, and a sand area sized right for toddlers. Adjacent Isham Park is smaller and quieter, good for a low-key afternoon on the grass. The streets west of Broadway are lined with pre-war apartment buildings, tree-lined sidewalks, and a Saturday farmers market on Isham Street that runs year-round. It feels quieter and more residential than most of Manhattan, with a strong sense of neighbors who actually know each other. The New York Public Library branch here runs regular programming for little ones, and NYC Parks keeps an active presence in the neighborhood. Getting here means the 1 or A train, both of which serve Inwood; plan your route around elevator access if you're pushing a stroller. Weekends in the park feel relaxed and well-used by local families, which makes it a good place to land even if you're coming from elsewhere in the city.
