The north shore of Staten Island has its own pace, and St. George sits at the center of it. The neighborhood is denser and more urban than most of the borough, with a mix of apartment buildings, Victorian-era houses on steep hillside streets, and a wide range of families who moved here partly because it's still one of the more affordable corners of New York City. For a parent with a toddler, the big practical win is the free Staten Island Ferry, a 25-minute ride to Lower Manhattan that costs nothing and runs around the clock. Most of the neighborhood falls within a 15-minute walk of the terminal, and the SIR train and a fleet of MTA buses also converge right here, so you can get almost anywhere on the island without a car. Day-to-day, there's a neighborhood playground on Stuyvesant Place a short walk from the main drag, and the St. George Library Center is an easy stroll from the ferry. The Staten Island Museum is right in the neighborhood and regularly hosts events for young kids.
