Richmondtown sits in the mid-island section of Staten Island, a quiet, low-density neighborhood of single-family homes and tree-lined streets with more green space per block than almost anywhere else in the five boroughs. The Staten Island Greenbelt runs right along its western edge, with trails and smaller playgrounds tucked inside it. The NYPL Richmondtown branch on Clarke Avenue has a dedicated second-floor children's area with its own story room, and it runs regular storytime and wiggle-and-sing programs for babies and toddlers. On weekends, the grounds of Historic Richmond Town make for a genuinely good stroller loop, with open lawns and seasonal events like the Richmond County Fair that little kids get a surprising amount of mileage out of. Getting here without a car is doable but takes planning: the Staten Island Railway stops at Oakwood Heights on the neighborhood's southern border, and a few bus routes run along Richmond Road. Most families who come for classes and activities drive in. Little Bee Learning Studio and South Beach Art & Design Studio both run programming here, giving parents a reason to make the trip even on a rainy Tuesday.
