Quiet, residential, and mostly made up of single-family homes and low-rise apartment buildings, East Elmhurst sits just south of LaGuardia Airport in northwestern Queens. The streets are tree-lined and low-key compared to nearby Jackson Heights, which makes it an easier place to push a stroller around on a weekday morning. For outdoor time, Gorman Playground on 84th Street and 25th Avenue is the neighborhood's main green space, with slides, swings, sprinklers, and a toddler-accessible area right in the middle of the residential blocks. The Queens Public Library branch on Astoria Boulevard is renovated and well-used, and it runs a Mother Goose storytime for the little ones, which is a good rainy-day anchor. There's no subway stop inside the neighborhood, but several bus routes including the Q19 and Q48 connect to the 7 train and the N/W lines nearby. Getting around with a stroller is doable on the side streets, though Astoria Boulevard itself is wide and busy. NYC Parks brings programming here, so some of the three upcoming events on this page happen outdoors in the neighborhood itself, which tends to feel more like a backyard than a commercial strip on weekends.
