A densely residential South Bronx neighborhood, Crotona Park East is defined more than anything else by its immediate access to Crotona Park, a 127-acre green space that sits right on its western edge. That park has eleven playgrounds spread across it, a 3.3-acre lake with turtles and ducks, and the Crotona Pool, the largest in the Bronx, which opens late June through early September. For a toddler, that is a lot of outdoors to burn through on a single outing. On the eastern side of the neighborhood, Starlight Park runs along the Bronx River with open space and trails that connect further toward the Bronx Zoo and Botanical Garden. The Morrisania branch of the New York Public Library, a Carnegie building on East 169th Street, is a short walk for storytime and books. Housing here is mostly apartments and subsidized rowhouses, with a lot of families on the block. Transit is genuinely easy: the 2 and 5 trains stop at Freeman Street, and multiple bus routes run through Southern Boulevard, so getting here without a car is straightforward. NYC Parks runs events in the neighborhood, including the six currently on this calendar.
