A wide, tree-lined boulevard running through the Bronx, Grand Concourse is a dense, residential stretch full of apartment buildings and, by extension, a lot of kids. Strollers are a normal sight, and the neighborhood has a real working-family rhythm to it. Joyce Kilmer Park sits right on the Concourse near 161st Street and has a playground that works well for younger children, with open green space alongside it. For indoor time, the Melrose branch of the New York Public Library recently completed a full renovation, adding a bright new children's floor at the top of the building with its own dedicated programming spaces. The library turns up regularly on this calendar, and the New York Public Library team there runs a solid lineup of kids' programming. Getting here without a car is easy. The B and D trains run directly under Grand Concourse, and the 4 train is a short walk west. Sidewalks along the main boulevard are wide and flat, which makes pushing a stroller straightforward. Weekends here feel local and low-key rather than crowded, which for a toddler outing is usually the right call.
