About kids' events in Van Cortlandt Park
One of NYC's biggest parks sits right here in the northwest Bronx, and it genuinely changes the texture of daily life with a small kid. Van Cortlandt Park covers over 1,100 acres of forest, meadows, and open fields, which means a two-year-old can run in a straight line for a very long time without hitting a fence. The park has five playgrounds scattered across its edges, including the Southwest Playground near the main entrance and the Northwest Playground, a nature-themed spot built with the 2-to-5-year-old set in mind, with a jungle gym, net climber, water feature, and swings. Spray showers at several playgrounds turn on when temperatures hit 80 degrees, which is worth bookmarking for summer. NYC Parks runs programming here throughout the year, including Urban Park Rangers events that are genuinely good for little kids. The Van Cortlandt branch of the New York Public Library on Cannon Place has a dedicated children's room and hosts playdates and family programs. Getting here without a car is real: the 1 train terminates right at 242nd Street, steps from the park's south entrance. Weekends here draw families from across the borough, and the residential blocks nearby are quiet and low-key.
