A quiet, spread-out corner of southeast Brooklyn, the Marine Park neighborhood is built around the largest park in the borough: nearly 800 acres of open fields, salt marsh trails, and multiple playgrounds with spray showers. On a weekend morning the park fills up with families running the oval track, flying kites, and letting toddlers loose on the playground near Fillmore Avenue, which has a spray pad and plenty of room to roam. The Salt Marsh Nature Center on Avenue U is worth a visit even with a one-year-old strapped to your chest: short trail, birds, crabs, fresh air. The Flatlands branch of Brooklyn Public Library sits nearby on Flatbush Avenue and serves the neighborhood directly. The streets are lined with brick rowhouses and have a low-key, residential feel: wide sidewalks, slower pace, a lot of families who have been here a long time.
