A low-key, residential corner of southern Brooklyn, Gravesend is the kind of place where kids grow up on tree-lined blocks of one- and two-family houses, not far from the Coney Island waterfront. The neighborhood moves at a quieter pace than most of Brooklyn, which makes pushing a stroller around on a weekday or weekend morning genuinely pleasant. For outdoor time, Lafayette Playground on Stillwell Avenue got a full renovation a few years back and now has synthetic turf and a revamped kids' area. The Gravesend Branch of Brooklyn Public Library sits on Avenue X and runs a "First Five Years" program, stories and songs specifically for toddlers, so it's worth checking their calendar on top of ours. The F train stops right at Avenue X, one block from the library, and the N and several bus lines are nearby, so getting in and out of the neighborhood without a car is workable. The 20 events on our calendar here pull in instructors from Generation Judo and Brooklyn Public Library, among others, so there's a real mix of physical and creative programming to try with a small kid.
