A tight, walkable Bronx neighborhood that sits right next to the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden, Belmont is the kind of place where kids grow up running the same streets their grandparents did. The blocks are mostly low-rise homes and apartment buildings, the streets are manageable with a stroller, and nearly everything you need day-to-day is within about ten blocks. For outdoor time, Belmont Playground on E. 182nd Street has swings for kids under five, water play features, and public restrooms, which is a bigger deal than it sounds when you are out with a toddler. Ciccarone Park, off Arthur Avenue, adds a splash pad to the mix. Both are easy to reach on foot from most of the neighborhood. The NYPL branch here, on E. 186th Street, runs programs for kids and is one of the spots you will see on the event list below. The Bronx Zoo is practically at the doorstep, so a membership pays off fast if you live nearby. Getting in and out without a car is doable: Metro-North stops at Fordham, and several bus lines cover the area for days when the subway feels like too much.
