A densely residential corner of the Bronx, East Tremont is the kind of neighborhood where kids grow up on stoops and sidewalks. The main anchor for outdoor time is Walter Gladwin Park, a 15-acre green space right on East Tremont Avenue with playgrounds, spray showers, and plenty of seating. Crotona Park is also close by, a much larger stretch of green with fields, a lake, and playgrounds that make for a solid longer outing. For rainy days, the Tremont Branch of the New York Public Library sits just a block off East Tremont Avenue and has a dedicated children's room upstairs. NYC Parks runs programming in the area, so the events you see below tend to happen in these same outdoor spaces. Getting around is genuinely easy without a car: several bus lines run along Tremont Avenue, and a Metro-North stop is in the neighborhood. East Tremont Avenue itself is lively on weekends, with food and errands all walkable. The Bronx Zoo is also just a short ride north, which makes this part of the Bronx a surprisingly practical base for little ones.
