A dense, mostly residential stretch of southern Brooklyn, Brighton Beach sits right on the Atlantic Ocean between Coney Island and Manhattan Beach. For a parent with a toddler, the biggest thing to know is that the beach and boardwalk are genuinely walkable from most of the neighborhood. On a warm weekend morning, the boardwalk is quiet and wide enough to push a stroller comfortably, and the sand is right there if your kid wants to dig. Brighton Playground, just off the boardwalk near Brighton 2nd Street, has play equipment, sprinklers in summer, and open space for small kids to run. The Brooklyn Public Library's Brighton Beach branch is a short walk inland and runs story time and kids programs throughout the year. The B and Q trains stop right in the neighborhood, making it easy to arrive from other parts of Brooklyn without a car. Streets are flat and blocks are short. Day-to-day, this is a tight-knit, Russian-speaking community with an unhurried pace that feels nothing like the tourist side of nearby Coney Island.
