Kids' Events in Alphabet City

About kids' events in Alphabet City

On the far east side of Manhattan, Alphabet City runs along Avenues A through D, a quiet, mostly residential stretch with a real locals-first feel on weekends. Young families with strollers are a common sight on the low-key side streets. The anchor for families here is Tompkins Square Park, a 10.5-acre park between Avenues A and B with three separate playgrounds, including a dedicated toddler area, baby swings, a sandbox, and water spray features for warm days. The New York Public Library's Tompkins Square branch sits at the north edge of the park and runs storytime programs for infants and toddlers, making for an easy park-plus-library morning in one block radius. Getting here takes a little planning. The closest subway is the L train at First Avenue, then about a ten-minute walk east. The area is flat and easy to navigate on foot, though it sits further from the train than most of Manhattan. The 17 events on this calendar come from NYC Parks, Mommy Poppins, and the Tompkins Square library branch, so the mix skews toward free, drop-in programs that fit naturally into a weekday morning.
