About this event

Welcome to the STEAM Museum Makers Lab, where kids don’t just learn about science and art — they curate it! Over 20 weeks, students become inventors, artists, and storytellers as they design hands-on exhibits inspired by creativity, innovation, and wonder. Students work in teams to research, prototype, and build their own mini museum displays — from ancient inventions to futuristic cities! Halfway through, they’ll host a Midterm Mini Museum, and at the end, they’ll unveil their Big STEAM Showcase — a full-blown, student-run museum experience. This class turns learning into an adventure in creativity, teamwork, and real-world problem-solving. Weeks 1–2: Welcome to the STEAM Museum! Theme: What makes a museum magical? Activities: “Museum Mystery” gallery walk (students explore photos of famous museums). Create museum roles (curators, designers, storytellers, builders). Build your first “micro-exhibit” with classroom materials. Goal: Understand what museums do and how exhibits tell stories. Weeks 3–5: Ancient Innovations Theme: From wheels to pyramids — discover how ancient engineers shaped the world! Activities: Explore inventions from Egypt, Greece, China, and the Americas. Build and test a simple machine (lever, pulley, or wheel). Design a mini “Ancient Innovation” exhibit with diagrams and artifacts. Goal: Connect science and history through hands-on creation. Weeks 6–8: Midterm Exhibit — The Museum of Ancient Genius Theme: Bring history to life! Activities: Finalize displays, artifact labels, and museum tour scripts. Host a Mini Museum Exhibit for families Goal: Practice presentation skills and teamwork while showcasing learning. Weeks 9–11: Art & Engineering Collide Theme: How do artists and engineers think alike? Activities: Explore kinetic art, architecture, and sculpture. Build moving art pieces using recycled materials, LEGO, or craft supplies. Experiment with symmetry, balance, and structure. Goal: Learn how design thinking blends art and science. Weeks 12–15: Cities of Tomorrow Theme: Imagine, design, and build the city of the future. Activities: Brainstorm futuristic technologies that solve modern problems. Work in teams to plan transportation, energy, and housing solutions. Build scale models or digital blueprints Goal: Apply engineering and creativity to solve real-world challenges. Weeks 16–18: Exhibit Design Studio Theme: Your museum, your rules! Activities: Choose your best projects to refine and display. Create interactive elements (signs, QR codes, models that move). Design the museum layout and visitor flow. Goal: Develop communication, organization, and teamwork skills. Weeks 19–20: The Grand STEAM Showcase! Theme: Step into your museum — you’re the curator! Activities: Big STEAM Showcase for parents and peers Give guided tours, explain exhibits, and celebrate creativity! Goal: Demonstrate understanding, pride, and presentation confidence. This is a joyful, high-energy adventure into the world of sound where kids explore the magic of music through interactive play, group creativity, and tons of fun. From funky rhythms to sweet harmonies, from global beats to local NYC legends, each session is a vibrant mix of musical discovery and cultural celebration. But wait—there's a twist: every class features a special dance lesson inspired by the music we’re learning that day! Whether it’s a samba groove from Brazil, a jazz step from Harlem, or a pop-and-lock to hip hop beats, your child will move to the music while learning about the sounds, instruments, and cultures that created it. Because what better way to feel the beat than to dance to it? What We Do: Explore musical building blocks: rhythm, melody, harmony, and ear training Listen to incredible tunes from around the world Play musical games and activities that spark curiosity and creativity Meet real musicians from NYC—special guests who bring their instruments and stories into our classroom And yes… learn a fun new dance move every time that matches the vibe of the day! Perfect for kids who love to move, groove, and make noise (the joyful kind!). No instruments or prior training needed—just open ears and happy feet. Our mission? To grow the next generation of music lovers, movers, and makers by building a deep appreciation for music, arts, and culture in our community—starting with our kids. Video Game Design

Mon, Apr 27 · 3:00 PM

S.T.E.A.M Lab · LIC

Level up your imagination! In this exciting series, you’ll become a real video game designer! Using Stencyl game creation software, you’ll dream up your own characters, worlds, and challenges — then bring them to life on screen. Best part? You’ll get to take your finished game home on a flash drive to share and play with friends and family. Get ready to code, create, and play your way to fun! What Your Child Will Learn Computer Skills Video Game Design gives students access to Stencyl game creation software to build their very own game. Students will follow along with the instructor to learn how to navigate this semi-complex software. After following along, children will repeat the learned procedures to create their very own, original game levels. Story/Character Development The basis for any great game are the characters and action. Through Snapology’s instruction ongame planning, students will learn to develop their own original story lev els including actors, enemies, power-ups, puzzle levels, and game transitions. Understanding these concepts will not only create a great game, but will also translate into better developed written/oral stories at home and in the classroom. Critical Thinking Skills In order to create a functional game, students will have to logically think through the physics of their game. Steps such as turning on gravity in their game world and sequencing levels are critical to the success of the game. Students will logically think through these aspects of game development, as well as use critical thinking to troubleshoot any issues that may arise while testing their game. Teamwork/Partner Skills As in real life game development, there are many decisions that require compromise and teamwork throughout Video Game Design. We emphasize in our classes that the students use good teamwork skills. They are required to do group planning and respect the opinions and ideas of their partners.
