About this event

Explore your artistic potential with Creative Aging, a series of art workshops for adults 50 and older. This program will be held in person at Battery Park City Library on Wednesday, May 13th from 2 PM to 3:30 PM. In this immersive art program, participants journey into the art of seeing, sensing, and making through the timeless Indian practice of Kolam—the ephemeral art of drawing with dots, lines, and rice flour. Once created daily at thresholds of South Indian homes, Kolam patterns are gestures of welcome, mindfulness, and beauty — now reimagined here as a lens to explore creative thinking, geometry, and the poetry of impermanence. Through guided exercises in observation, pattern-making, and experimentation, participants will uncover how simple dots and lines can become powerful tools for perception and expression. Each session gently expands the idea of pattern—from ritual practice to modern abstraction, from hand to mind, from precision to play. The program invites older adults to rediscover flow, curiosity, and embodied creativity in a calm, social, and reflective environment. No prior art experience is necessary—just a willingness to draw, connect, and explore. Registration is encouraged, but not required. Walkups will be permitted as space accommodates. SHSAT Spring Prep Course (In-Person)

Tue, May 12 · 5:30 PM

Tutoring Center - Smith Street Workshop · Carroll Gardens

The SHSAT is changing. Beginning in Fall 2026, the exam will move to a digital, computer-adaptive format—a major shift in how students take the test. This 7-week Spring SHSAT course is fully updated to reflect these changes and is designed to prepare students for both the academic content and the new testing experience. This course is identical to the first seven weeks of our 13-week Comprehensive SHSAT program and serves as a strong foundation for students beginning their prep. It’s a great fit for students just getting started, as well as those continuing from our Winter Skill-Builder course, which focuses on strengthening core ELA and math fundamentals. It’s also a great option for families who want to begin with a structured group class and decide later whether to continue with private tutoring or a fall group course, based on the student’s progress and goals. Instruction focuses on 7th grade ELA and math content, along with an introduction to test-taking strategies tailored to the new digital format. Students will learn how to manage pacing without the ability to return to questions, navigate tech-enhanced items (TEIs), and adjust to adaptive question sequencing. The course begins with a diagnostic mini-test in both ELA and math to help instructors tailor instruction to the group’s needs. After each class, students receive targeted homework to reinforce key concepts and strategies. The course concludes with a full-length, proctored digital practice exam, administered in person at our center to replicate the real testing environment. Families receive a detailed score report to help inform next steps. The Spring Prep Course includes: 14 instructional hours 1 full-length proctored digital practice exam As with all of our SHSAT offerings, we are closely monitoring DOE updates and will continue to adapt our curriculum to ensure students are fully prepared for every aspect of the exam.

The SHSAT is changing. Beginning in Fall 2026, the exam will shift to a digital, computer-adaptive format—a major change in how students take the test. Our 13-week Comprehensive Course is fully updated to reflect this new format and is designed to prepare students for both the academic content and the digital testing experience. The course begins in the spring of 7th grade and continues into the fall of 8th grade, concluding just before the SHSAT. It’s a great fit for students just beginning their prep, as well as those continuing from our Winter Skill-Builder course, which focuses on solidifying core ELA and math fundamentals. The Comprehensive course builds on that foundation, moving into more advanced content and test-specific strategies aligned with the new digital format. We start with a mini-diagnostic in ELA and math to help tailor instruction to the group’s needs as we move through the curriculum. While the SHSAT will continue to assess 7th grade math and ELA standards, the computer-adaptive format introduces new features, including adaptive question sequencing, updated navigation rules, and tech-enhanced items (TEIs). Students will learn strategies specifically designed for this format, helping them manage time effectively, navigate the interface confidently, and avoid common pitfalls. Students receive targeted homework after each class to reinforce key skills and strategies. A summer practice packet is also included to support continued progress between semesters. Throughout the course, students complete three full-length, proctored digital practice tests featuring TEIs that replicate the official testing interface. These are administered in person at our center to provide a realistic and fully supervised testing experience that mirrors actual exam conditions. The Comprehensive course includes: Spring : 7 two-hour classes + 1 proctored digital test in June Fall : 6 two-hour classes + 2 proctored digital tests in August/September and October Total : 26 instructional hours + 3 proctored full-length digital practice exams As the DOE continues to release updates, we are actively refining our materials to ensure students are fully prepared for every aspect of the new SHSAT.
