About this event

For this No-School workshop, students will learn about artist Helen Frankenthaler. She is known for her massive abstract paintings and playful use of color. Students will build their very own canvas from scratch by stretching and pinning it into place. Then they will learn Frankenthaler's techniques to create their own version of her paintings. As students work, they will learn about her life and how she developed her artistic techniques. Our No-School workshops run from 9am-3pm, so please pack a lunch! Weather permitting, we will spend some time at the local park. Students will be using multi-media materials and should expect to get messy!

CLASS DESCRIPTION: Some say that Mansa Musa has been the wealthiest person to ever live. Whether this is right or wrong, the accumulation of wealth that happened during his reign as the head of the Mali Empire is a fascinating tale of how trans-Sahara trade networks operated during the mid to late Middle Ages. During this semester, we will dive into the empire of Mali, understanding how gold and salt generated riches beyond comparison for the continent of Africa. We’ll learn about Saharan trade routes involving gold and salt, the wealthy ruler Mansa Musa, Timbuktu, and the Islamic faith during the period. We’ll also look at the epic story of Sundiata, some authors like Ibn Battuta and Leo Africanus and the cultural advancements made during the period. Our main project will be inspired by the Great Mosque of Timbuktu. We will also look at medieval manuscripts, art pieces, and instruments from the time period for inspiration for our art projects. Art-intensive, with a focus on multi-media art making and history learning. Students will gain confidence in their art skills as they work with quality art materials and build their own miniature worlds. Each class includes a topical or historical lesson, followed by project led art-making time. We teach history through art! Our afternoon workshops are supplemental learning sessions to your child's education, as we add geography and history to all of our art classes. Our unique curriculum is designed and taught by Anna (MFA) and Juan Carlos Donado (PhD in Philosophy). CLASS DESCRIPTION: Diving into the region of West Africa, we will look at various art forms including masks, textiles, sculpture, architecture, puppetry, and literature, creating multiple art projects inspired by this culture. In our West African study, depending on the time at hand, we will focus specifically on art from Ghana, Nigeria, and Mali. Our art projects will be inspired by such topics as Kente cloth from Ghana, the Benin and Yoruba sculptures from Nigeria, and the puppetry, stories, and architecture from Mali. We will most likely spend some time getting to know a child friendly version of the Story of Sundiata , which is essential when studying the prosperous Kingdom of Mali in the 13th century. We teach history through art! We teach history through art! Our Studio B is home to our youngest and first-time Goose Greasers , who will learn the basic building blocks of art-making and our Goose Grease style. Our pedagogical approach is to immerse our students in our topic of study while creating, taking notes, and having inspiring conversation.
