About this event

Elim Chan conducts selections from Prokofiev’s Cinderella — a harmonically rich, at times whimsical ballet not often heard in an orchestral setting — plus the New York Premiere of Noriko Koide’s Swaddling Silk and Gossamer Rain, with textures as delicate as the title suggests. Principal Cello Carter Brey also takes center stage in Saint-Saëns’s dramatic Cello Concerto No. 1. Sheku Kanneh-Mason, previously scheduled to perform Elgar’s Cello Concerto, has had to withdraw from his New York Philharmonic appearances this season doing to his ongoing recovery from a finger injury. He is extremely disappointed to be unable to play with the New York Philharmonic and Elim Chan. He is grateful for the support and understanding he has received, and looks forward to returning to the New York Philharmonic.

An unprecedented collaboration between two New York–based orchestras, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, the Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Music & Artistic Director Designate. On the first half: Dudamel leads the Philharmonic in Latin-flavored works spanning a century from across the Americas, including a work by Gabriela Ortiz. On the second, they are joined by the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, a three-time Grammy-winning Salsa and Latin Jazz band led by Oscar Hernández.
