About this event

In this mixed-ages House Building workshop, kids will build structures fit for humans, pets, and other creatures (big or small, real or imaginative). Kids learn how to use planning, engineering, woodworking and critical thinking skills to create their structures. Found objects and other recycled materials will be used to build the structures. Pick-up is available from PS 10 and PS 295. (Please note: if a group of 5 or more kids is interested in after school pick up from another school within walking distance of the KoKo Lot, please email info@kokonyc.org to discuss options.) Pick-up is an optional add-on that applies to the full semester. The cost for pick-up is $120 ($15/session). Kids are picked up by a KoKo Teaching Artist at school dismissal time and escorted to the Lot. Kids have snack and playtime until the workshop begins at 3:30PM. Workshop Dates for Spring 2026: 4/15, 4/22, 4/29, 5/6, 5/13, 5/20, 6/3, and 6/10 (8 sessions) NO Workshops on: 5/27 More about the workshop: This workshop takes place at the KoKo NYC Lot located at 440 19th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215, between 8th Ave and Prospect Park West The workshop will take place fully outdoors There is a port-a-potty onsite for bathroom use Kids will use handsaws, battery-operated drills, and other tools in this workshop After school workshop registration provides the option for an installment payment plan. In this mixed-ages workshop, kids will become a team of scientists, artists, and innovators! We will work together as a team to design and build compound machines with cranks, gears and levers. We will combine a foundation of learning about six simple machines (inclined plane, wedge, lever, wheel and axle, screw, pulley) with inspiration from our local environment at the KoKo Lot. Found objects will be taken apart and repurposed as our building materials along with recycled materials. Pick-up is available from PS 10, PS 295, K280, and PS 321 Upper. In this mixed-ages, sustainability-focused workshop, kids will learn about using materials already available to us to build something new! Kids will start with deconstructing existing structures at the KoKo Lot and old / discarded electronics while thinking about how the disassembled pieces can be repurposed, recombined, and reinvented. Find out how what you uncover through deconstructing can become something totally unexpected and unique! Using the KoKo Lot and our recycled/found objects as inspiration, KoKo staff help kids imagine possibilities and bring their ideas to life. Pick-up is available from PS 130 Upper and Lower schools. Boat Building is a mixed-ages “Sink AND Swim” workshop that explores the physics of boat building by creating flotation structures. Kids learn how to use planning, engineering, woodworking, and critical thinking to create functional boats and models. They explore traditional and experimental methods based on their own sensibilities. Boats will be created out of found materials. We create blueprints and small model floats, steering mechanisms, as well as an actual boat / floating contraption which will be tested in the waters of Brooklyn. Kids will use handsaws, battery-operated drills, and other tools in this workshop. The class will include a Maiden Voyage on Sunday, June 7, 2026 , where kids will set sail at Plumb Beach ! Mark your calendar: Maiden Voyage boat preparation will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at the KoKo Lot . Pick-up available from PS 10, PS 295, and PS 321 Upper.
