Mercredi français: Advanced French Conversation Group

Wed, May 13 · 2:00 PM

New York Public Library

Mercredi français is an advanced French conversation group that meets one afternoon a week to practice speaking the language we love. We start as a whole group, introducing ourselves and answering a “question profonde,” such as “What is your favorite color and why?” After about half an hour we break up into groups of three or four to allow for an hour of small, spontaneous group conversations. We currently have participants from various countries and of various ages. Our only requirement is that everyone needs to be able to sustain a conversation in French . . . all French speakers are entirely welcome! Please note: This is NOT a class to learn French. It is a conversation club for French speakers, and is conducted entirely in French.

We need to detoxify our minds . This world we live in is a stressful place and there are many factors that can have a negative impact on our daily lives. By befriending our mind we can wipe the slate clean and detoxify our negative thought patterns and calm the body. Join Dave Buck long time meditator and learn how to implement a simple yet very powerful meditation technique that can be life changing. There will be a chance to try this out. New York Public Library

**This event will be online only** Artificial intelligence can generate words, but that is different from writing. Using these tools properly can help you - but improper or uncollaborative use can destroy your credibility or lead to legal trouble. Publishing, like many industries, is working to address issues of plagiarism or flattening of voice. Crossing the wrong line can mean being dismissed before you ever get in the room. In this candid, strategic talk, best-selling author and publishing expert Meredith Fineman breaks down what it takes to develop a distinct voice in a sea of sameness—and why that voice is now your greatest advantage. She also addresses the AI experts and other writing experts, where they predict AI and writing is going, as well as how to write in this new environment. Drawing on her work developing Big Five-ready nonfiction proposals and advising high-level clients, Fineman covers: Why AI is flooding the market with content—and raising the bar for originality Where the line is between using AI as a tool and undermining your authority What publishers, agents, and editors are actually flagging right now How to find and articulate a voice that is specific, defensible, and recognizably yours How to use the Brag Better framework to talk about your work in a way that reflects real substance—not polish Click here to register. She works with founders, executives, and writers to turn real expertise into clear, compelling ideas that stand out—and stand up to scrutiny. If you are writing, publishing, or trying to get noticed right now, this talk will give you a framework most people don’t yet have. Please note: IMPORTANT! 100 Page Book Club: "My Friends" By Fredrik Backman

Thu, May 14 · 11:30 AM

New York Public Library

This is an in-person program. Have you been meaning to read more, but don’t have time to sit down and get through a long book? Join us for our 100 Page Book Club! Every week, we will meet to discuss a book, 100 pages at a time. No need to rush through the whole thing—this club is here to take it slow. Most people don’t even notice them—three tiny figures sitting at the end of a long pier in the corner of one of the most famous paintings in the world. Most people think it’s just a depiction of the sea. But Louisa, an aspiring artist herself, knows otherwise, and she is determined to find out the story of these three enigmatic figures. Twenty-five years earlier, in a distant seaside town, a group of teenagers find refuge from their bruising home lives by spending long summer days on an abandoned pier, telling silly jokes, sharing secrets, and committing small acts of rebellion. These lost souls find in each other a reason to get up each morning, a reason to dream, a reason to love. Out of that summer emerges a transcendent work of art, a painting that will unexpectedly be placed into eighteen-year-old Louisa’s care. She embarks on a surprise-filled cross-country journey to learn how the painting came to be and to decide what to do with it. The closer she gets to the painting’s birthplace, the more nervous she becomes about what she’ll find. Louisa is proof that happy endings don’t always take the form we expect in this stunning testament to the transformative, timeless power of friendship and art. No Registration Required. Abandoned by the city government, nearly a half-million people were displaced as their close-knit, multi-ethnic neighborhood burned, reducing the community to rubble. While insidious government policies caused the devastation, Black and Puerto Rican residents bore the blame. In this story of hope and resistance, Bronx-born Vivian Vázquez Irizarry exposes the truth about the borough’s untold history and reveals how her embattled and maligned community chose to resist, remain and rebuild. DECADE OF FIRE tells the story of the South Bronx that you’ve never heard before, and offers us a roadmap for building the American communities we want and truly deserve. The New York Times | Press Quotes "[Co-director] Vázquez interweaves memories of her upbringing with a rundown of civic practices that, in combination, led to the Bronx’s decline. Some, like Robert Moses’s partitioning of the Bronx with the Cross Bronx Expressway or 'redlining' — the systematic denial of investment to neighborhoods dominated by racial minorities — will be familiar to any student of urban planning or New York history."
